Attacking Tumors with the Immune System: Immunology and immunotherapy have rapidly become some of the most discussed fields in health sciences over the past few years. Dr. Pilon-Thomas, Associate Professor in the Department of Immunology at the Moffitt Cancer Center, will guide guests through an introduction to the immune system and its role in cancer. Current strategies to improve immune responses against tumors and ongoing clinical trials in patients with cancer will also be discussed.

You are what you eat - understanding cancer metabolism: Understanding how cancer cells differ from their normal counterparts is crucial for identifying the best therapies. The DeNicola lab focuses on understanding cancer metabolism, how it is different from normal cellular metabolism, and which metabolic processes are critical for the growth and survival of tumors.

In vivo cancer research - using mice to study the biology of tumors: How do tumors evolve in the context of the whole organism? How do tumors interact with their micro-environment and the immune system? How do cancer cells spread to distant organs? How do tumors respond to therapy? Addressing these and other questions requires animal models that closely resemble the genetics and histopathology of human cancers. Dr. Karreth will discuss how using the laboratory mouse as a surrogate for human patients teaches us a great deal about the intricacies of cancer.
