Confusion: Let’s Clear the Air about Fusion!

Hear from 4 scientists at General Atomics, an energy and defense corporation based right here in San Diego!

Expediting fusion modeling through the use of high-performance computing and the use of machine learning models

In my talk I will describe how fusion scientists make use of computers for a variety of analysis and modeling tasks. These tasks can be accelerated through the use of massively parallel resources to build up databases of results. The databases can be used to train machine learning models that even further accelerate the evaluation of those tasks.

Inertial Fusion: A Brief Outline Featuring Recent Trials & Milestones

This talk will provide a brief background on how inertial fusion works, as well as its major advantages and drawbacks. Starting with the structure of the different types of inertial fusion experiments, and why precise experimental setup is so critical. Recent milestones will be covered as well as what makes pursuing inertial fusion challenging and rewarding.

Fusion energy – harnessing the power of stars on Earth

Fusion research in "magnetic bottles" seeks to make plasmas 10x hotter than our own sun, right here in SD at the DIII-D tokamak! This facility, operated by General Atomics and the Department of Energy, seeks to find a way to make a magnetic bottle efficient enough to have the process of fusion generate more energy than is used to kickstart the initial reaction. This talk will focus on talking about what it's like to work at this specialized facility, focusing on the who, what, and why!
