Science is the new black!

presented by taste of science festival 2021!

An instalment to our latest project: taste of SciArt

Why? Because science and scientists are creative, and art contains so many elements of science. This series is to introduce people making connections between the two..

Join our host Ankita Patil, a scientist and artist in her own right, as we sit down to chat with folks creating all manner of beautiful things. Learn more about their research, their techniques and maybe you too can get inspired!

Our speakers include:

Ankita Patil (host)

I'm a grad student in the Neuroscience PhD program at Drexel University College of Medicine. I work on structural elements called microtubules, and how these microtubules are organized in nerve cells to influence their structure and function. I’m also the city coordinator of taste of science Philly.

I like involving myself in activities that allow me to communicate about science and basic research, and often draw doodles about biology as well. Exploring Philadelphia's museums, trying out new restaurants and cafes, and watching The Great British Baking Show (repeatedly) on Netflix, are some ways I like to spend my free time!

You can find me on twitter as @grouchomunks and on instagram @eccentricdoodles.

Beata Mierzwa

Beata studies how human cells divide and shares the beauty of science through art and fashion. Her PhD research at the Institute of Molecular Biotechnology revealed that the final step in cell division is more dynamic than people previously thought. Now, working at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research at UCSD, she studies how different types of cells divide. Her goal is to broaden the world’s understanding of cell division and improve cancer therapy.

When not doing experiments, Beata creates science-themed drawings and clothes. Her illustrations portray scientific concepts in intuitive ways, while her science fashion celebrates the beauty of the molecular world. Making artwork for journal covers, conferences, and even space mission patches, her unique approach to science communication aims to spark curiosity and fascination for science. As a AAAS IF/THEN Ambassador and Vice-Chair of Young Women in Bio – Southern California, Beata’s mission is to inspire creative young women who will change the world with innovative research and groundbreaking discoveries.
