Ending a week of science in style
Join us Saturday afternoon at Mongoose versus Cobra as we finish a week of amazing science with some sex (science) as well as the science behind drugs (well, one) and a little bit of Rock and Roll in between. Can you think of a better way to spend your weekend?
Dr. Richard De La Garza will join us to tell us about the science behind e-cigarretes and whether they actually help you quits smoking (the drug part). And as for the sex and the rock and roll? Well you'll have to watch this space to find out!
Why sex is good
Ricardo Azevedo
University of Houston
Most organisms alive today have had sex in the recent past. However, ever since Darwin, evolutionary biologists have been struggling to explain why sex is so prevalent. It turns out that it is a much more complicated question than it appears. I will give an overview of the costs and benefits of sex and introduce some of the attempts to solve the mystery of sex.
Are electronic cigarettes the end of smoking as we know it?
Richard De La Garza, II
Baylor College of Medicine
Several studies indicate that electronic cigarette use is increasing, particularly among current smokers, and especially adolescents. Many users believe that e-cigarettes pose substantially less harm than conventional tobacco cigarettes, and that they can be used to reduce/quit smoking. Despite these claims, there is little scientific evidence to support the use of e-cigarettes for tobacco cessation and health professionals have several concerns about the use of these unregulated products.
